WOULD

(FUTURE IN THE PAST)

 

İngilizcede would esasen will’in geçmiş (past) biçimidir.

 

Hatırlanacağı gibi will’in Türkçedeki karşılığı Gelecek Zaman Kipi olan -ecek veya -acak’tır. Would ise Türkçeye -ecekti, -acaktı veya -erdi, -ardı, (Gelecek Zamanın Hikayesi) şeklinde tercüme edilir. 

 

Positive sentences (Olumlu cümleler)

 

Olumlu cümle özneyle başlar. Ardından would gelir. Fiil (infinitive) ve nesne sonda yer alır.

Soru kelimeli sorular soru kelimesiyle başlar. Ardından would ve özne gelir. Fiil ve gerekiyorsa nesne cümle sonunda yer alır.

Use of WOULD

 

1. Would, will’in past biçimidir. Noun clause’da ana cümle Simple Past Tense olduğunda yan cümlede will, would’a dönüşür.

 

- I know he will win the race. (Yarışı onun kazanacağını biliyorum.)

- I knew he would win the race. (Yarışı onun kazanacağını biliyordum.)

 

- I think she will fail the exam. (Onun sınavdan kalacağını zannediyorum.)

- I thought she would fail the exam. (Onun sınavdan kalacağını zannediyordum.)

 

- The manager hopes that the prices will fall. (Müdür fiyatların düşmesini umuyor.)

- The manager hoped that the prices would fall. (Müdür fiyatların düşmesini umuyordu.)

 

- He says he will come to class on time. (Derse vaktinde geleceğini söylüyor.)

- He said he would come to class on time. (Derse vaktinde geleceğini söyledi.)

 

- He promises he will send a postcard from Egypt. (Mısır’dan kartpostal göndermeye söz veriyor.)

2. Öznenin yapma niyetinde olduğu ama bir nedenle yapamadığı eylemleri ifade etmek için kullanılır.

 

- I would visit you, but I was too busy.

(Seni ziyaret edecektim, ama çok meşguldüm.)

 

- She would finish the project, but her computer crashed.

(Projeyi bitirecekti, ama bilgisayarı çöktü.)

 

- They would come to the party, but they had other plans.

(Partiye geleceklerdi, ama başka planları vardı.)

(Konsere gidecektik, ama biletler tükenmişti.)

3. Geçmişte sürekli yapılan - ama artık yapılmayan - eylemleri ifade ederken would V1 kullanılır. Bu kullanımıyla used to V1 ile eş anlamlıdır. Ancak eylem bildirmeyen fiillerle (non-action verbs) would kullanılamaz. Non-action verbs (stative verbs) sadece used to ile kullanılabilir.

- I would / used to play with my toys when I was a child.

(Çocukken oyuncaklarımla oynardım.)

 

- Grandpa would / used to tell me stories before I went to bed.

(Dedem bana yatmadan önce hikayeler anlatırdı.)

 

- She would / used to take ski lessons when she was a teenager.

(Gençken kayak dersleri alıyordu.)

 

- Before the steam engine, people would / used to travel in carriages pulled by horses.

(Buhar motorundan önce insanlar atlar tarafından çekilen arabalarla seyahat ederdi.)

 

Like fiili non-action fiildir. Dolayısıyla used to ile kullanılabilir. Ancak would’la kullanılamaz.

 

- I used to like chocolate when I was a small child. (I would like chocolate when I was a small child.)

(Küçük bir çocukken çikolatayı çok severdim.)

 

4. Hayali bir durumu ifade etmek için:

 

- Life would be much more difficult without computers.

(Bilgisayarlar olmadan hayat çok daha zor olurdu.)

(İnsan ırkı, susuz bir dünyada uzun süre kalıcı olmazdı.)

5. If koşul cümlelerinde (Type II & III):

 

If clause second conditional (type II) ve third conditional (type III) cümlelerde hayali durumları ifade etmek için would kullanılır.

 

UNREAL CONDITIONAL

 

Aşağıda type II (second conditional) cümle kalıbı görülüyor.

 

If subject V2 object, subject would V1 object  If subject were object, subject would V1 object

 

- He would help us if he were here.

(O burada olsaydı, bize yardım ederdi.)

 

- If she had a lot of money, she would give some of it to charities.

(Eğer çok parası olsaydı, bir kısmını hayır kurumlarına verirdi.)

 

- If I were you, I would save my money.

(Senin yerinde olsaydım, paramı biriktirirdim.)

 

UNREAL CONDITIONAL (PROGRESSIVE)

 

If subject V2 object, subject would be Ving object

 

Would be Ving Türkçeye -yor olurdu veya -yor olacaktı şeklinde tercüme edilir.

 

“Şu ana ilişkin gerçek olmayan bir durum eğer gerçek olsaydı, buna bağlı olarak sonucu ne olurdu?” sorusunun cevabını verir.

 

- If I were in Antalya, I would be lying on the beach now.

(Eğer Antalya’da olsaydım, şu anda plajda yatıyor olacaktım.)

 

- If the teacher were here now, we wouldn’t be talking. We would be studying.

(Eğer öğretmen burada olsaydı, konuşuyor olmazdık. Ders yapıyor olurduk.)

 

- If my arm weren’t broken, I would be playing tennis now.

(Eğer kolum kırık olmasaydı, şu anda tenis oynuyor olurdum.)

 

Aşağıda type III (third conditional) cümle kalıbı görülüyor.

7. Son derece nazik tekliflerde: (happy, delighted, glad, pleased gibi sıfatları kullanarak)

Nazik bir şekilde birisinden bir şey yapmasını isterken (kibar bir şekilde ricada bulunurken) would’un cevabı evet / hayır türünden soru yapısı kullanılır.

9. Geçmişte gerçekleşmeyen eylemlere ilişkin serzenişte bulunurken:

 

Geçmişte istediğimiz halde gerçekleşmeyen olayları wouldn’t V1 ile ifade edebiliriz. Bu durumda wouldn’t V1 Türkçeye tıpkı Simple Past Tense gibi tercüme edilir.

 

- My baby daughter wouldn’t eat her food.

(Kızım mamasını bir türlü yemedi.)

 

- The car wouldn’t start this morning.

(Araba bu sabah bir türlü çalışmadı.)

 

- My mother wouldn’t give me any money.

10. Wish clause yapıyla geleceğe ilişkin bir arzu ya da dileği ifade ederken:

11. Reported (Indirect) speech yani dolaylı anlatımda will future’la kurulan cümleler would kullanılarak aktarılır.

 

Maria: I will call you tomorrow. (Direct speech)

Maria said that she would call me the next day. (Indirect speech)

Maria: Seni yarın ararım / arayacağım.

Maria beni yarın arayacağını söyledi.

 

Helen: I will lend you my book. (Direct speech)

She said she would lend me her book. (Indirect speech)

Helen: Sana kitabımı ödünç veririm.

O bana kitabını ödünç vereceğini söyledi.

 

12. Nazik olmayı gerektiren durumlarda, emin olmadığımız eylemler hakkında konuşurken veya resmi bir dil kullanmamız gerektiğinde advise, agree, imagine, recommend, say, suggest, think, vb. fiillerle would kullanılabilir.

13. İstekleri ifade ederken:

 

“Hoşlanmak” ve “sevmek” manasında kullandığımız like ya da love fiillerinin önüne would getirdiğimizde, (would like / would love) ifadelerin anlamı “istemek” olur. Would like ve would love ifadelerinden sonra isim ya da infinitive (to V1) kullanılır.

15. Tercihleri ifade ederken:

 

Would rather ve would prefer belli bir durum veya zamana ilişkin tercihlerimizi ifade ederken kullandığımız yapılardır. Genel tercihlerimizi prefer Ving ya da prefer to V1 ile ifade ederiz.

Öznedeki kişi geçmişte “bir eylemi yapacaktı / yapmış olurdu / yapardı “ama bir nedenle yapmadı ya da yapamadıysa bu durum would have V3 ile ifade edilir.
