TAG QUESTIONS

- You are tired, aren’t you? (Yorgunsun, değil mi?)

     sentence          tag

İngilizcede “değil mi?” soruları (tag questions) Türkçede olduğu gibi tek bir kelimeyle yapılmaz. Tag, cümlenin tense’ine göre değişir. Cümle hangi tense’le söylenmişse, o tense’in yardımcı fiili cümle sonuna getirilir. Ancak cümle olumluysa yardımcı fiil olumsuz, cümle olumsuzsa yardımcı fiil olumlu olur. Ardından da cümlenin öznesi zamir olarak getirilir.

 Positive sentence, negative tag

Aşağıdaki cümlenin tense’i geniş zamandır.

- Jim plays football on Sundays,  doesn’t he? (Jim pazar günleri futbol oynar, değil mi?)

             positive sentence             negative

                                                               tag

- Jim plays football on Sundays,  doesn’t Jim?

Tag questionda isim kullanılamaz. Bu yüzden Jim yerine he (zamir) kullanılmıştır.

    positive     negative

   sentence       tag

Present Tense of to be’de yardımcı fiil (is) cümlede olumlu olduğu için tag question olumsuz (isn’t) olmuştur. Özne (it) zamir olduğu için cümle sonuna değişmeden gelir.

- The children are still playing in the garden, aren’t they? (Çocuklar hala bahçede oynuyor, değil mi?)

                     positive sentence                     negative tag

Present Continuous Tense’deki bu cümle olumludur. Bu yüzden tag question olumsuz (aren’t) olur. Özne (the children) tag question’da zamir olmak zorunda olduğu için they olmuştur.

- They were very angry, weren’t they? (Çok kızgındılar, değil mi?)

      positive sentence    negative tag

Past Tense of to bede yardımcı fiil (were) olumlu olduğu için tag question olumsuz (weren’t) olmuştur. Özne (they) zamir olduğu için cümle sonuna değişmeden gelir.

- You have been to Thailand, haven’t you? (Tayland’da bulundun, değil mi?)

          positive sentence         negative tag

- Tom should do his homework, shouldn’t he? (Tom ödevini yapmalı, değil mi?)

            positive sentence           negative tag
