2. NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE
(EXTRA INFORMATION CLAUSE)
(Tanımlamayan ilgi cümlecikleri)
Daha önce tanımlamayan ilgi cümleciği olarak sözünü ettiğimiz non-defining relative clause’un diğer bir adı da extra-information clause’dur. Defining-relative clause (tanımlayan ilgi cümleciği) adından da anlaşılacağı gibi kendisinden önce gelen ismi tanımlar veya tarif eder. Non-defining relative clause (tanımlamayan ilgi cümleciği) ise ardından geldiği ismi tanımlamaz. Onunla ilgili fazla bilgi verir ve iki virgül arasında yazılır. Non-defining relative clause cümleden çıkarıldığında geriye kalan ana cümle anlamlı bir cümledir.
DİKKAT: Non-defining relative clause’da who ve which yerine that kullanılamaz. Ayrıca object position’da relative pronoun (who, whom, which) cümleden çıkarılamaz.
WHO, WHOM, WHICH, WHOSE in non-defining relative clause
1. Özel isimler kimden, neyden veya nereden bahsedildiğini açıkça belli ettiği için tanımlanmayı gerektirmez. Bu yüzden özel isimlerden sonra başlayan relative clause, non-defining relative clause (extra-information clause) olarak adlandırılır.
- Professor Grant, who teaches us physics, is going to retire next month.
(Bize fizik dersi veren Profesör Grant, gelecek ay emekli olacak.)
- Arthur and Sabrina, who got married yesterday, went to Rio for their honeymoon.

2. Eğer ana cümlenin öznesinin ya da nesnesinin önünde iyelik sıfatlarından (my, your, his, her, its, our, their) biri varsa non-defining relative clause’dur. Çünkü iyelik sıfatı kimden / neyden bahsettiğimizi ortaya koyar ve ismi tanımlamaya gerek bırakmaz. Bu yüzden relative clause’da verilen bilgi non-defining (extra information clause) olarak nitelendirilir.
- Our uncle, who lives in Australia, invited us to his wedding.
(Avustralya’da yaşayan amcam beni düğününe davet etti.)
- My boyfriend, who met me at the airport, carried my suitcase.

3. İsmin önünde bir işaret sıfatı (this, that, these, those) varsa ardından gelen relative clause non-defining relative clause’dur. Çünkü bu durumda da isim, işaret sıfatıyla belli edilmiştir ve tanımlanmaya ihtiyacı yoktur.
- This car, which has been manufactured by Toyota, has a diesel variant.
(Toyota tarafından üretilen bu otomobilin dizel çeşidi de var.)
- That car, which was produced in 1952, is a classic now.
(1952’de üretilen şu araba şimdi bir klasiktir.)
- These umbrellas, which are primarily used for protection from the sun, have different types. (Öncelikle güneşten korunmak için kullanılan bu şemsiyelerin farklı tipleri de var.)
- Some of those trees, which are going to be cut down tomorrow, had been planted by my father.

4. İsim, önüne veya sonuna getirilen sıfatlarla ya da edatlarla tanımlanmış, bir başka değişle belli edilmişse ardından gelen relative clause non-defining’dir. Burada relative clause’un tanımlama görevi yoktur. Bu durumda relative clause fazla bilgi veren bir nitelik taşır.

5. Cümlenin öznesi belli bir ismi genel anlamıyla kastediyorsa bu ismi tanımlamaya gerek yoktur. Bu durumda söz konusu isimden sonra gelen relative clause non-defining relative clause olarak nitelenir.
- Elephants, which are the largest land mammals, live in herds of 10 or more adults.
