PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

 

Positive sentences (Olumlu cümleler)

 

Past Perfect Continuous Tense’de olumlu cümle özneyle başlar. Sonra yardımcı fiil had ve been gelir. Fiil -ing (Ving) alır. Nesne ve zaman zarfı gerekliyse en sonda yer alır.

 

Subject  had been  Ving  object  time expression

 

- We had been travelling for two hours when the accident happened.

(Kaza olduğunda, iki saattir seyahat etmekteydik.)

 

- He had been smoking for twenty years when he stopped it. 

(Sigarayı bıraktığında, yirmi yıldır sigara içmekteydi.)

 

- The house looked clean because my mother had been cleaning it.

(Ev temiz gözüküyordu çünkü annem evi temizlemişti.)

 

- My father had been working all day, so he was tired.

(Babam bütün gün çalışmıştı, bu yüzden yorgundu.)

Negative sentences (Olumsuz cümleler)

 

Present Perfect Continuous Tense’de olumsuz cümle yapmak için yardımcı fiil had’den sonra not getirilir.

Cevabı evet / hayır türünden sorular yardımcı fiil had’le başlar. Ardından özne, been ve fiil (Ving) gelir. Nesne ve zaman ifadesi en sonda yer alabilir.

Soru kelimeli sorular soru kelimesiyle başlar. Sonra yardımcı fiil had, özne, been ve fiil (Ving) gelir. Cümlenin nesnesi en sonda yer alır.

USE OF PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

 

1. Geçmişte başlamış ve belli bir süre devam ettikten sonra sona ermiş eylemleri ifade etmek için kullanılır. Bu bakımdan Present Perfect Continuous Tense’in past (geçmiş) biçimidir.

 

- She is tired because she has been cleaning the house for three hours. (Present Perfect C.)

- She was tired because she had been cleaning the house for three hours. (Past Perfect C.)    

 

- He is frustrated because he has been trying to solve the problem for hours. (Present Perfect C.)

- He was frustrated because he had been trying to solve the problem for hours. (Past Perfect C.)   

 

- We are anxious because we have been waiting for the results since morning. (Present Perfect C.)

- We were anxious because we had been waiting for the results since morning. (Past Perfect C.)   

 

- She felt exhausted because she had been doing exercise for an hour.

(Bitkin hissetti çünkü bir saattir egzersiz yapıyordu / yapmaktaydı.)

 

- I had been looking for my car keys for twenty minutes and found them under the sofa.

(Yirmi dakikadır arabamın anahtarlarını aramaktaydım. Onları kanepenin altında buldum.)

 

- David was out of breath when I saw him. He had been jogging for half an hour.

(Gördüğümde David nefes nefeseydi. Yarım saattir koşuyordu / koşmaktaydı.)

(Terfi almadan önce, şirkette beş yıldır çalışıyordu / çalışmaktaydı.)

 

2. Geçmişte bir eylemin ne kadar süredir devam ettiğini vurgulamak için kullanılır.

 

- He had been studying for three hours when the power went out.

(Elektrik kesildiğinde, üç saattir ders çalışıyordu / çalışmaktaydı.)

 

- Tom had been driving for two days when he finally reached Los Angeles.

(En nihayetinde Los Angeles’a ulaştığında, Tom iki gündür araba kullanmaktaydı / kullanıyordu.)

 

- She had been waiting at the airport for two hours when her flight got cancelled.

(Uçuşu iptal edildiğinde, iki saattir havaalanında bekliyordu / beklemekteydi.)

 

- We had been playing tennis for 45 minutes when it started to rain.

(Yağmur yağmaya başladığında, kırk beş dakikadır tenis oynuyorduk / oynamaktaydık.)

 

- He had been living in New York for six years when he got a job offer from London.

- She was out of breath because she had been running up the stairs.

(Nefes nefeseydi çünkü merdivenleri koşarak çıkmıştı.)

 

- When I woke up, I saw that it had been raining.

(Uyandığımda, yağmur yağdığını gördüm.)

 

- Their hands were dirty because they had been gardening all morning.

(Elleri kirliydi çünkü bütün gün bahçe işleriyle uğraşmışlardı.)

 

- He was exhausted because he had been working late every night that week.

(Bitkindi çünkü o hafta her gece geç saatlere kadar çalışıyordu / çalışmaktaydı.)

 

- The room was filled with smoke because they had been burning wood in the fireplace.

(Oda duman doluydu çünkü şöminede odun yakıyorlardı.)

 

4. Bir eylem gerçekleştiğinde / gerçekleşmeden önce, bir başka eylemin ne kadar zamandır devam ettiğini söylemek için Past Perfect Continuous Tense when, before ve by the time bağlaçlarıyla birlikte Simple Past Tense’le sıkça yan yana gelir.

Subject  had  been  Ving  object  for + a period of time  by the time  subject  V2  object

 

- They had been waiting for the bus for twenty minutes when it came.

(Otobüs geldiğinde yirmi dakikadır bekliyorlardı.)

 

- We had been watching the match for one hour when the electricity went out.

(Elektrik kesildiğinde maçı bir saattir izliyorduk.)

 

- When she resigned, she had been working for that company for thirteen years.

(İstifa ettiğinde, on üç yıldır o şirket için çalışıyordu / çalışmaktaydı.)

 

- Her husband had been trying to reach Jane for two hours when she answered the phone.

(Jane telefona cevap verdiğinde, kocası iki saattir ona ulaşmaya çalışıyordu / çalışmaktaydı.)

 

- We had been waiting for the bus for thirty minutes before it arrived.

(Otobüs gelmeden önce, onu 30 dakikadır beklemekteydik.)

(Sızıntıyı fark ettiklerinde, tavandan üç gündür su damlıyordu.)

 

- The team had been training hard for weeks by the time the championship began.

(Şampiyona başladığında takım haftalardır yoğun bir şekilde antrenman yapıyordu / yapmaktaydı.)

 

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE or PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

 

Past Continuous Tense’le Past Perfect Continuous Tense arasında bir fark vardır. Past Continuous Tense’de sadece geçmişte belli bir noktada ne yapıyor olduğumuzu söyleriz. Ancak bu işi ne kadar zamandır yaptığımızı da belirtmek istiyorsak Past Perfect Continuous Tense kullanmamız gerekir.

Subject  had  been  Ving  object  for + a period of time  when  subject  V2  object

 

Aşağıdaki cümleleri inceleyiniz.

 

Aşağıdaki iki cümleden ilkinin tense’i Past Continuous, ikincisinin tense’i ise Past Perfect Continuous’tur. Cümleleri inceleyerek iki tense arasındaki farkı keşfetmeye çalışınız.

 

1. My friend was waiting for me outside the cinema when I arrived there.

(Vardığımda arkadaşım sinemanın önünde beni bekliyordu.)

 

2. My friend had been waiting for me outside the cinema for twenty minutes when I arrived there.

(Vardığımda arkadaşım yirmi dakikadır sinemanın önünde beni bekliyordu.)

 

Yukarıdaki ilk cümleden anlaşılan, sinemaya vardığımda arkadaşımın beni bekliyor olduğudur. Ancak ikinci cümlede, ilk cümleden farklı olarak arkadaşımın beni sinemanın önünde ne kadar zamandır beklediğini de öğreniyorsunuz. Bu durumda eylemin ne kadar süredir devam ettiğini gösteren for kullanılmaktadır. Böyle bir durumu ifade ederken Past Perfect Continuous Tense kullanılır.

 

Past Continuous Tense’de for kullanılmaz. Bu yüzden aşağıdaki cümle yanlıştır.

 

- My friend was waiting for me outside the cinema for twenty minutes when I arrived there.

 

1. I was talking on the phone when he entered the room.

2. I had been talking on the phone for half an hour when he entered the room.

 

Yukarıdaki ilk cümleden anlaşılan, o girdiğinde telefonla konuşuyor olduğumdur. Ancak o odaya girdiğinde bu eylemi ne kadar zamandır yaptığımı da söylemek istiyorsam, tense ikinci cümlede de görüldüğü gibi Past Perfect Continuous olmak zorundadır.

 

Aşağıdaki cümleler arasında sadece vurgulanan anlam bakımından fark vardır.

 

- He’d been sleeping when the fire started.

(Yangın başladığında uyuma eyleminin bir süredir devam ettiği vurgulanıyor.)

 

- He’d been sleeping for an hour when the fire started.

(Yangın başladığında uyuma eyleminin bir saattir devam ettiği vurgulanıyor.)

 

- He was sleeping when the fire started.

(Yangın başladığında öznenin uyuyor olduğuna vurgu yapılıyor. Bu cümlede önemli olan yangın başladığında öznenin ne yapıyor olduğudur.)  

 

PAST PERFECT TENSE VS PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

 

- I’d waited an hour for the bus. (Eylemin bitmiş olduğuna vurgu var.)

- I’d been waiting an hour for the bus. (Eylemin süresine vurgu var.)

 

- She’d cleaned the house by the time her guests arrived.

(Bu cümlede eylemin misafirler gelmeden önce bittiğine vurgu yapılıyor.)

 

- She’d been cleaning the house for two hours when her guests arrived.

(Bu cümlede eylemin ne kadar zaman devam ettiğine vurgu yapılıyor.)

 

- She’d always worked in the same company.

(Öznenin ne kadar zaman aynı şirkette çalıştığını bilmiyoruz.)

 

- She had been working in the same company for 30 years when she retired.

(Bu cümledeyse öznenin ne kadar zamandır aynı şirkette çalıştığı önemli ve vurgulu.)

 

Bazı fiiller continuous tense’lerle kullanılmaz.

 

Continuous tense’lerle kullanılmayan fiiller (stative verbs like know, like, understand, believe, hear, smell, taste) Past Perfect Continuous Tense’de de kullanılmaz.

 

- We’d known for a long time that the company would close.

(We’d been knowing …)

 

- We’d tasted the meat and had decided it was bad, so we threw it away.

(We’d been tasting the meat …)

 

Bir anda olup biten eylemler (start, stop, cut, hurt) continuous tense’lerle ifade edilmez.

 

- Had they started the game on time? (Had they been starting the game on time?)

 

PAST PERFECT TENSE  or   PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE
