PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(ŞİMDİKİ ZAMANIN HİKAYESİ)
Şimdiki zamanın hikayesi Türkçede fiile -yordu eki getirilerek yapılır. İngilizcede ise aşağıda görüldüğü gibi cümle özneyle başlar. Yardımcı fiiller was / were’den sonra fiil -ing alır. Cümle nesne ve zaman ifadesiyle sona erebilir.

USE OF THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
1. Geçmişte belirli bir zamanda devam eden eylemleri anlatırken Past Continuous Tense kullanılır.
- I was watching the news on TV at ten o’clock in the morning.
(Sabah saat onda televizyonda haberleri seyrediyordum.)
- Mia was cooking dinner at five o’clock.
(Mia saat beşte akşam yemeği yapıyordu.)
- We were discussing the project at two o’clock in the afternoon.
(Öğleden sonra saat ikide projeyi tartışıyorduk.)
- They were trying to solve the problem this time yesterday.
(Dün bu vakitlerde problemi çözmeye çalışıyorlardı.)
- My brother was flying to New York at this hour yesterday.
(Kardeşim dün bu saatte New York’a uçuyordu.)
- The manager was giving a presentation when you called.

2. Geçmişte bir eylemin bir süre devam ettiğini vurgulamak için:
- She was crying.

- There were screams everywhere. Everyone was crying.
(Her yerde çığlıklar vardı. Herkes ağlıyordu.)

(Sonra kurtarma görevlilerini gördüm. Hayatta kalanları kurtarmak için çok çabalıyorlardı.)
3. Geçmişte sık sık olan şaşırtıcı ya da nahoş bulduğumuz eylemleri always, constantly, continually, forever, perpetually, all the time gibi zarflarla Past Continuous Tense’de ifade edebiliriz.
- I didn’t like her at all because she was always complaining about the food.
(Sürekli yemeklerden şikâyet ettiği için onu hiç sevmezdim.)
- They were constantly arguing at night. It wasn't easy to sleep.
(Geceleri sürekli tartışıyorlardı. Uyumak kolay değildi.)
- As a baby, my brother was always making a mess.
(Bebekken kardeşim sürekli etrafı dağıtıyordu.)
4. Geçmişte bir eylem vuku bulduğunda başka bir eylemin devam ettiğini ifade etmek için:
- Martha was leaving her house when she heard the thunderstorm.
(Martha, gök gürültüsünü duyduğunda evinden çıkıyordu.)
- We were walking down the street when the bomb exploded.
(Bomba patladığında cadde boyunca yürüyorduk.)
- They were sleeping peacefully until the alarm rang.
(Alarm çalana kadar huzur içinde uyuyorlardı.)
- The cat was napping when its owner came home.
(Sahibi eve geldiğinde kedi uyuyordu.)
5. Hikâye anlatırken:
- The other day, I was waiting for a bus when I saw him.
(Geçen gün onu gördüğümde otobüs bekliyordum.)
- Last week, as I was driving to work, something strange happened.
(Geçen hafta işe giderken garip bir şey oldu.)
- When I first saw him, he was dancing with a girl.
(Onu ilk gördüğümde, bir kızla dans ediyordu.)
- The birds were singing, and the sun was shining. I knew it would be a good day.
(Kuşlar ötüyor, güneş pırıl pırıl parlıyordu. Güzel bir gün olacağını anladım.)
- They were driving to the beach when they noticed their car had a flat tyre.
(Lastiklerinin patladığını fark ettiklerinde plaja gidiyorlardı.)
6. Geçmişte tekrar eden eylemleri ifade ederken:
- I was practising three times a day.
(Günde üç kez prova yapıyordum.)
- We were meeting secretly after school.
(Okuldan sonra gizlice buluşuyorduk.)
- They were always quarrelling.
(Sürekli kavga ediyorlardı.)
7. Değişim ve büyüme ifade eden fiillerle:
- The children were growing up quickly.
(Çocuklar hızla büyüyordu.)
- His English was improving.
(İngilizcesi ilerliyordu.)
- My hair was going grey.
(Saçlarım ağarıyordu.)
- The town was changing quickly.
(Kasaba hızla değişiyordu.)
- The problem was getting bigger and bigger.
(Sorun gittikçe büyüyordu.)
8. Non-action (stative) fiiller, Past Continuous Tense’de kullanılmaz.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE or PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
1. Simple Past Tense ile geçmişte belli bir zamanda olmuş bitmiş olayları anlatırız. Oysa Past Continuous Tense geçmişte devam etmekte olan olayları ifade etmek için kullanılır.
- I had a shower before I left home this morning. (Simple Past Tense)
(Bu sabah evden ayrılmadan önce duş aldım.)
- I was having a shower when you called me this morning. (Past Continuous Tense)
(Bu sabah beni aradığında duş alıyordum.)
- She took a walk in the park before noon. (Simple Past Tense)
(Öğleden önce parkta yürüyüş yaptı.)
- She was taking a walk in the park at 11.00. (Past Continuous Tense)
(Saat 11.00’de parkta yürüyüş yapıyordu.)
2. Daha önce stative verbs olarak öğrendiğimiz fiiller (continuous tense’lerde kullanılmayan fiiller) Past Continuous Tense’de de kullanılmaz.
- The cake tasted delicious. (The cake was tasting delicious.)
(Kek lezzetliydi.)
- He knew everything. (He was knowing everything.)
(O her şeyi biliyordu.)
3. “From ________ to / until _______” ile başlangıç ve bitiş noktaları belli edilen eylemleri Past Continuous Tense’le ifade edebiliriz.
- She was lying on the beach from 11.00 until 12.00 yesterday.
- I was working in a bank from 2011 to 2015.
WHEN and WHILE sentences
While bağlaç olarak kullanıldığında “iken” anlamına gelir. Geçmiş hakkında cümleler kurarken ardından Past Continuous Tense ya da Simple Past Tense gelir.
Daha önce öğrendiğimiz gibi when “ne zaman” anlamına gelen bir soru kelimesidir. Aynı zamanda bir bağlaçtır. When bağlaç olarak kullanıldığında, ardından Simple Past Tense geliyorsa, Türkçeye “yaptığında”, “yaptığı zaman”, “yapınca” şeklinde çevrilir. Eğer when’den sonra Past Continuous Tense kullanılmışsa tıpkı while gibi “iken” anlamındadır. Bir başka değişle when ardından Past Continuous Tense gelmek şartıyla while ile eş anlamlıdır.
When bağlaç olarak kullanıldığında, ardından gelen tense göre Türkçeye nasıl tercüme edildiğine dikkat ediniz.

When my father came home: Babam eve geldiğinde / gelince
When / While I was dancing: Dans ederken

Geçmiş hakkında konuşurken when ve while bağlaçlarını Simple Past Tense ve Past Continuous Tense’deki iki cümleyi bağlamak için sıklıkla kullanırız.
1. When Past Simple, Past Continuous
(Past Continuous when Past Simple)
- When the electricity went out, I was watching football on TV.
- I was watching football on TV when the electricity went out.
(Elektrik kesildiğinde, televizyonda futbol maçı izliyordum.)
- When the shark attacked her, she was swimming.
- She was swimming when the shark attacked her.
(Köpekbalığı ona saldırdığında, o yüzüyordu.)
- When I went into the room, the baby was sleeping.
- The baby was sleeping when I went into the room.
(Odaya girdiğimde, bebek uyuyordu.)
- What were you doing when you heard the explosion?
(Patlamayı duyduğunda, ne yapıyordun?)
- The wind was blowing hard when we went out.
(Dışarı çıktığımızda, rüzgâr sert esiyordu.)
2. When Past Simple, Past Simple
(Past Simple when Past Simple)
- When she heard the bad news, she began to cry.
- She began to cry when she heard the bad news.
(Kötü haberi duyunca, ağlamaya başladı.)
- When I looked out of the window, I saw an accident.
- I saw an accident when I looked out of the window.
(Pencereden dışarı baktığımda, bir kaza gördüm.)
- He felt relieved when I told him the truth.
(Ona gerçeği anlattığımda, rahatladı.)
- I got off the train when it stopped.
(Tren durunca, indim.)
- George felt very happy when his father mended his bike.
(Babası bisikletini tamir edince, George mutlu oldu.)
- When the dog saw the cat, it began to bark.
(Köpek kediyi görünce, havlamaya başladı.)
- When Joe shouted at Tina, she left him in the cafe and went away.
(Joe Tina’ya bağırınca, Tina onu kafede bırakarak oradan ayrıldı.)
3. When / While Past Continuous, Past Simple
(Past Simple when / while Past Continuous)
- While / When she was dancing, she twisted her ankle.
- She twisted her ankle while / when she was dancing.
(Dans ederken, ayak bileğini burktu.)
- While / When I was ice skating, I fell on the ice.
- I fell on the ice while / when I was ice skating.
(Buz pateni kayarken, düştüm.)
- While / When she was paying for the meal, she dropped her credit cards.
(Yemeğin parasını öderken, kredi kartlarını düşürdü.)
- While / When Sam was milking the cows, a stranger came into the barn.
(Sam inekleri sağarken, bir yabancı ahıra girdi.)
- While / When she was drying her hair, the electricity went out.
(Saçını kuruturken, elektrik kesildi.)
- The thieves broke into the house while / when they were sleeping.
(Onlar uyurken, hırsızlar eve girdi.)
4. While Past Continuous, Past Continuous
(Past Continuous while Past Continuous)
- While we were answering the questions, our teacher was marking our exam papers.
- Our teacher was marking our exam papers while we were answering the questions.
(Biz soruları cevaplarken, öğretmenimiz sınav kağıtlarımıza not veriyordu.)
- While their parents were lying on the beach, the children were swimming in the sea.
- The children were swimming in the sea while their parents were lying on the beach.
(Anne babaları plajda yatarken, çocuklar denizde yüzüyordu.)
- The birds were flying above us while we were fishing.
(Biz balık tutarken, kuşlar üzerimizde uçuyordu.)
- While the fans were waving their flags, the teams were coming onto the pitch.
(Taraftarlar bayraklarını sallarken, takımlar sahaya çıkıyordu.)
- I was vacuuming the floor while my mother was putting the dirty plates in the dishwasher.
(Annem kirli tabakları bulaşık makinasına koyarken, ben yerleri süpürüyordum.)
- We were having lunch in a restaurant while they were doing shopping.

Just as
Just as, “tam iken” veya “tam -dığı sırada” anlamına gelir ve as’den daha vurguludur.
- He arrived at the station just as the train was leaving.
(Tam tren ayrılırken, istasyona vardı.)
- Just as I was getting into the building, the earth began to shake.
(Tam binaya giriyordum ki, yer sarsılmaya başladı.)
- Just as I sat down, somebody knocked on the door.
