CONDITIONAL SENTENCES (IF CLAUSE)
(KOŞUL CÜMLELERİ)
If clause: Koşul cümlesi (Yan cümle)
Main clause: Ana cümle
Koşul cümleleri if koşul cümlesi ve ana cümle olmak üzere iki cümlecikten (clause) oluşur. If’den sonra gelen cümle (yan cümle) koşul cümlesidir. Diğer cümleyse ana cümledir. Ana cümledeki olayın gerçekleşmesi koşul cümlesindeki eylemin gerçekleşmesine bağlıdır. Koşul cümlesiyle ana cümlenin yerleri değiştirilebilir. Bu durumda iki cümle arasında hiçbir anlam farkı olmaz. Ancak aşağıdaki örnekte de görüldüğü gibi koşul cümlesi (if clause) baştaysa, iki cümle arasına virgül koymak gereklidir. Eğer ilk sırada ana cümle (main clause) yer alıyorsa, virgül kullanılmaz.

Type 0 (Zero Conditional) (Present)
Zero conditional her zaman doğru olan durumları ve bilimsel gerçekleri ifade etmek için kullanılır. Aşağıdaki tabloda da görüldüğü gibi hem koşul cümlesi hem de ana cümle, Simple Present Tense’le ifade edilir.

Type I (First Conditional) (Future)
Bir koşula bağlı olarak gelecekte bir eylemin gerçekleşeceğini söylerken First Conditional (Type1) kullanılır. Aşağıdaki tabloda da görüldüğü gibi If’den sonra gelen koşul cümlesini Simple Present Tense’le ifade ederiz. Ana cümle ise Will Future Tense, Going to Future Tense, can, may, might ya da bir imperative (emir cümlesi) olabilir. Aşağıdaki tabloyu inceleyiniz.

Eğer ana cümledeki eylemin (koşul cümlesindeki eyleme bağlı olarak) gerçekleşme ihtimali varsa o zaman ana cümlede may / might kipleri kullanılır.
- If Linda drives dangerously, she may / might cause an accident.
(Eğer Linda tehlikeli sürerse, bir kazaya yol açabilir.)
- If you consume too much caffeine, you may / might have sleep problems.

Eğer ana cümledeki eylemin koşul cümlesindeki eyleme bağlı olarak gerçekleşmesi mümkün oluyorsa, bu kez ana cümlede can kullanılır.
- If I meet him, I can talk to him about it.
(Eğer onunla karşılaşırsam, bu konu hakkında onunla konuşabilirim.)
- If it stops raining, we can go to the park.

unless: if not
Unless koşul cümlelerinde sıkça kullandığımız bir bağlaçtır. Tıpkı if gibi cümleyi şarta bağlar ve cümleyi anlamca olumsuz yapar. Bir başka değişle if…not gibi görev yapar. Aşağıdaki cümleleri inceleyiniz.

Type II (Second Conditional) (Present / Future)
Geleceğe ya da şu ana ilişkin hayali bir durumu (gerçek dışı bir durumu) ifade etmek için Second Conditional (Type 2) kullanılır.
Aşağıdaki tabloda da görüldüğü gibi second conditional’da If’den sonra Simple Past Tense gelir. Ana cümledeyse would V1, could V1 veya might V1 kullanılır. Ancak if’den sonra di’li geçmiş zaman (Simple Past Tense) kullanılması bizi yanıltmamalıdır. Cümle geçmiş hakkında değil, şimdi ya da gelecekle ilgilidir.
Geçmiş zamanda isim cümlesi (Past Tense of to be) kurarken I, he, she ve it şahıs zamirlerinden sonra was kullanmamız gerektiğini daha önce öğrenmiştik. Ancak aşağıdaki örneklerde de görüldüğü gibi second conditional koşul cümlelerinde was yerine were kullanmayı tercih ediyoruz. Çünkü cümle if’den sonra geliyor ve hayali bir durumu (gerçek olmayan durum) ifade ediyor.

(Eğer babam şimdi burada olsaydı, bize yardım edebilirdi.)
(Gerçek olan şu ki babam burada değil ve bize yardım edemez.)
If it weren’t so expensive: Eğer bu kadar pahalı olmasaydı…
- If it weren’t so expensive, I would buy it.
(Eğer bu kadar pahalı olmasaydı, onu alırdım.)
(Gerçek durum: O çok pahalı ve bu yüzden alamıyorum.)
If I were you / If I were in your shoes: Eğer senin yerinde olsaydım… / Senin yerinde olsam…
Yukarıdaki her iki ifade de “senin yerinde olsaydım” anlamına gelir ve tavsiyede bulunmak için kullanılır.
- If I were you, I would study more.
(Senin yerinde olsaydım, daha çok ders çalışırdım.)
- If I were you, I would stop smoking.
(Senin yerinde olsaydım, sigarayı bırakırdım.)

(Eğer çok zengin olsaydım, yoksullara yardım ederdim.)
(Anlaşılan o ki, zengin değilim. “Eğer zengin olsaydım” diyerek bir hayal kuruyor. “Yoksullara yardım ederdim” ifadesinden de anlıyoruz ki şu anda bunu yapamıyorum.)

(Bu soruyu sorduğunuz kişi zengin değil ve istediği yerde yaşamak gibi bir seçeneği yok. Öyleyse siz karşınızdaki kişiye yaşamayı hayal ettiği yeri soruyorsunuz.)
A: What would you do if you were the President of your country?
B: I would focus on educational matters first.
A: Eğer ülkenin başkanı sen olsaydın, ne yapardın?
B: Önce eğitim meselelerine odaklanırdım.
(Bu soruyu sorduğunuz kişi ülkenin başkanı değil. Siz ondan hayal / farz etmesini ya da düşünmesini istiyorsunuz. “Eğer şu anda başkan olsaydı, ne yapardı?”)
If’den sonra fiil cümleleri de gelebilir. O zaman da Simple Past Tense’in kuralı olarak özneden sonra fiilin ikinci (past) halini kullanırız.

First conditional gelecek hakkında konuşurken kullanılır. Yukarıdaki cümleden anlaşılan bu kişinin gelecekte para sahibi olma umudunun olduğu ve bu olduğu takdirde de bir araba alacağıdır.
Type 2: If I had enough money now, I would buy a car. (PRESENT / FUTURE)
(Yeterince param olsaydı, araba alırdım.)
Second conditional şu ana ya da geleceğe ilişkin gerçekleşme ihtimali neredeyse hiç olmayan bir hayali ortaya koyar. Yukarıdaki cümleden anlaşılan kişinin yeterince parası olmadığı ve bu nedenle araba alamadığıdır.
Type 3: If I had had enough money last year, I would have bought a car. (PAST)
