Both, either ve neither her zaman iki insan veya iki şey hakkında konuşurken kullanılır.

 

both: her ikisi, her ikisi de

either: ikisinden biri

neither: hiçbiri (iki ögeden)

Both “her ikisi de” anlamına gelir ve tek başına kullanılabileceği gibi ardından çoğul bir isim de gelebilir. Both olumsuz cümlelerde kullanılmaz. Bunun yerine either kullanılır.

Either “ikisinden biri” anlamına gelir. Tek başına kullanılabileceği gibi ardından tekil bir isim de gelebilir.

NEITHER

 

neither: not one not the other

 

Neither “iki insan ya da şeyden hiçbiri” anlamına gelir. Tek başına kullanılabileceği gibi ardından tekil bir isim de gelebilir. Neither’ın unutulmaması gereken bir özelliği de cümleyi anlamca olumsuz yapmasıdır. Bu yüzden tıpkı never’ın kullanımında olduğu gibi bir cümle de hem not hem de neither olamaz.

 

A: Tina, what would you like, tea or coffee?

B: Neither, thanks. I’ve just had some milk.

A: Tina, hangisini istersin, çay mı yoksa kahve mi?

Both, either ve neither, of’la da kullanılabilir. Bu durumda isim kesinlikle çoğul olmalıdır. Ayrıca çoğul ismin önünde the artikeli, bir işaret sıfatı (these veya those) ya da bir iyelik sıfatı (my, your, his, her, its, our, their) kullanılmalıdır.
