İngilizcede -ing veya -ed ile biten kelimeleri gördüğünüzde fiil olduklarını düşünebilirsiniz. Oysaki fiile -ing veya -ed ekleyerek türetilen pek çok sıfat vardır. Aşağıda -ing ve -ed ile biten ve sıfat olarak kullanılan kelimelerin bir listesini görmektesiniz.

Bu sıfatlar bir duyguyu, bir duygu durumunu ortaya koyan sıfatlardır. “-ing” ile bitenler o duyguyu yaratan, o duyguya yol açan isimleri, olayları, nesneleri nitelemek için kullanılır. Bu sıfatları çevirirken Türkçede sıfata -ici, -ıcı ekleri getirilir. Örneğin, yorucu, sıkıcı, şaşırtıcı, korkutucu, endişe verici gibi.
Bu sıfatlar çoğunlukla "to be" fiilinin çekimleriyle, yani "am", "is", "are", eğer cümle geçmiş zamansa "was" veya "were"den sonra getirilerek kullanılırlar. Hal böyle olunca “-ed” ile biten sıfatlar (“-ing” ile bitenler değil) to be fiillerinden sonra geldiği için aslında bunların edilgen yapılar olduğunu anlayabiliriz.

Am, is, are, was veya were’den sonra fiil 3. halde gelince bildiğiniz gibi geniş ya da geçmiş zamanda edilgen yapı elde edilir. Ancak bunlar yapı itibariyle edilgen olsalar da fiilden türetilmiş sıfat sayılır.
